My reading challenge: New author

Hi everyone! So I decided to start something a little different on my blog today. If you’ve been following my blog for a while you will know I used to take part in the blogger book nook. However, Abbey made the decision that July’s prompt would be the last. Although I enjoyed being a part of the group and taking part each month, I understand why Abbey made this decision.

However, this also meant that I didn’t have a particular feature on my blog anymore. I obviously write book reviews but I kind of wanted something that would stand out. Taking inspiration from the group and something similar I had seen on Instagram I decided to create my own reading challenge.

The idea behind this is that I’ve created a list of ‘prompts’ of the types of books I want to read (I will put this below) and I will share a review of the book I read for each prompt as well as my feelings towards the prompt (e.g. Would I pick up a similar book?). It’s quite similar to the book nook but I won’t have a specific prompt for each month, I’ll just do them in no particular order. I will probably share a post once a month, so it is kind of the standout post of the month. I also welcome other people to take part! For this month, I decided to read something by an author I’d never read before. It can be hard as a reader to pick up a new author as you have no idea what their writing style is like and what if you hate them? But they could also be your new favourite! I had a lot to choose from for this prompt, but I eventually settled on Marissa Meyer. I’ve actually been wanting to read Renegades by her for a while but had only just picked it up.

“Secret Identities. Extraordinary Powers. She wants vengeance. He wants justice.

The Renegades are a syndicate of prodigies — humans with extraordinary abilities — who emerged from the ruins of a crumbled society and established peace and order where chaos reigned. As champions of justice, they remain a symbol of hope and courage to everyone… except the villains they once overthrew.

Nova has a reason to hate the Renegades, and she is on a mission for vengeance. As she gets closer to her target, she meets Adrian, a Renegade boy who believes in justice — and in Nova. But Nova’s allegiance is to a villain who has the power to end them both.”

Rating: ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐

OK, so I had very mixed feelings about this book. I enjoyed it overall, but I found it a very slow burner. I felt like there wasn’t a lot going particularly in the beginning as you are just kind of getting to know the characters. I did like the premise behind the book and it gets intriguing as it goes on but it just takes a while to get going, particularly for how long the book actually is. I feel like I would have also liked it to be in the first person rather than third, particularly as it’s kind of multiple povs which I think would have worked better in the first person. However, there are things you don’t expect and the ending throws a spanner in the works.

In terms of Marissa Meyer, I feel like I would read another of her books. I actually already plan on reading the sequel to this but I would also like to read heartless which is about the queen of hearts. I’ve wanted to read her books for a while so this has definitely given me the incentive I need to pick up another of her books. I would definitely recommend her work also.

Have you read renegades? What are your thoughts on picking up a new author? Feel free to share your thoughts in the comments.

Thanks for reading!

Abbie. X
