The self

When I think of myself,
I see a pretty girl,
With blue eyes and brown hair,
That falls just in the right way,
I see a pretty girl who’s face glows,
Who’s smile shines,
Who’s eyes glisten.
But I see myself in the mirror,
Feeling like my dreams are shattered,
Becoming disconnected from who I really am.
The self that I imagine,
Starts to unravel,
Starts to change.
I begin to see myself,
In a different light.
But it’s not a bad self,
Just a new one.

So poetry is something I have wanted to do for a while. However, I started to realise, particularly when I got the inspiration to write this one, that a lot of poetry comes from inside you and not out of thin air, at least when starting out initially. The words have to resonate with you. That’s exactly what this poem is, my feelings. The words just came to me and I just knew I had to share it on my blog because it is something I have wanted to do for a long time. I have to give credit to Breanna over at Too Cute For Life as her poetry has inspired to start writing my own.

I’ll admit that it may not be polished but I am pretty happy with how it has turned out, particularly as I haven’t thought about poetry for a long time. I did think that the first two lines of the end section could have been the last two lines and I wasn’t going to add the last two lines but I actually like the way it turned out and I think it brought up the mood of the poem. I am also sharing my poems on my blog for a bit of feedback so please share any thoughts you have about it.

How do you feel about this poem?

  1. Here it is!!! I’m so happy you took the plunge, girl. Poetry is a wonderful thing, and it gets stronger the more you persist with it. I look forward to many more poems from you. The emotions in this one are so relatable. I’ve been there for sure.

  4. Yay for sharing a poem! I think it’s quite lovely — I can really relate to what it’s saying, too. And Bre’s poems really are inspiring! I’m glad you decided to share one of yours, and hope there’s more to come in future!

  5. I love this but I almost feel like you could be more raw? If that makes any sense. I feel like you wanted to really say something more with this but just didn’t know how so you simplified your words. I could see you really branching out of the ordinary with your writing. ❤

    Much love xx
