Hi everyone! So this is the third draft of this post but I think I may have finally cracked it. I’m really into writing chatty posts lately so I am trying to incorporate more of that. This post was originally solely about Valentine’s Day but I was inspired by Hannah Gale’s post feeling conflicted as it got me thinking about the kind of pressures people within our society put on us.
I have to admit that I am in the middle when it comes to Valentine’s Day as I can see both sides of the argument. I can totally get on board with the idea of it being a day to spend quality time with your partner and spoil them rotten but at the same time I agree with the fact that you don’t need one day to spend quality time with someone and to spoil them rotten and that it is commercialised. That being said, everyone is welcome to have their own opinion and shouldn’t be made to feel bad about it whether they love it or hate it. If you love it you shouldn’t be made to feel bad by people saying you’re being sucked in by consumerism, likewise if you hate it then you shouldn’t be made to feel bad by people saying you’re being bitter because you are single (I’m in a relationship FYI, not everyone in a relationship has to love valentines).
Hannah talked about how she felt that the idea of minimalistic living was being forced upon her and that she was being made to feel bad for wanting a luxurious lifestyle. I totally agree with this! I get people want to live their lives a certain way, whether that’s as a minimalist, a vegan or however else. However, just because you want to live your life a certain way it doesn’t mean everyone else should have to live the same way or be made to feel bad for living in a way that conflicts your way of living. Everyone is perfectly entitled to live however they want to live.
The point of this post was that people are entitled to their own opinions and lifestyle choices and shouldn’t be made to feel bad about them. People shouldn’t be pressured to ‘conform’ with others, if they share the same views as you then that’s great but it’s also fine for them to live a different way of life to you. What social pressures do you feel exist? Feel free to share them in the comments.
Thanks for reading!
